I don’t know anything about international players or college players or really jack shit about the NBA draft - but because I don’t want to write about the 3+ hours I spent watching an Indians baseball team on ESPN tonight try to win with Oberlin’s bullpen, I’m going to bring up Spanish PG Ricky Rubio, who was once the consensus number two pick in the draft (June 25th).
This is completely conjecture on my part, but watch what goes on with OKC and Memphis on draft night. Rubio, represented by Dan Fegan - aka Andy Varejao’s agent - is looking to place him somewhere other than Memphis or Washington, and OKC and Sacramento probably don’t want to draft him, either because of the potential for a fight with the Spanish team that owns his rights or because of questions about his outside shooting and strength. Fegan is exploring trades, looking to get a team to move up and swap with OKC or Memphis.
The Cavs could use a *gasp* starting or back-up PG, and it’s been mentioned in some circles previously that the Cavs would look to draft one (this was before the ORL series). Varejao’s contract situation, obviously, is up in the air although nothing definitive can be done until June 30th. However, given the common denominator here of Dan Fegan, the tea leaves might suggest he’s at least thinking about Varejao’s deal with the Cavs and the possibility of a sign-and-trade. Rubio’s name could be bouncing in his head in the same realm.
As stated, this is merely imaginary connect-the-dots on my part, but it’s the kind of movement that could make sense since this shit tends to be all about convenience and connections (see: Danny Ainge & Kevin McHale; also Sam Presti - OKC’s GM - worked with Danny Ferry in San Antonio).
To what end, of course, who knows…
