It’s Really Not About Winning

I won’t tell you guys how old I am, but —- well, I’m Dad, so I’m older than most of you. Which should make me wiser, but unfortunately, I guess I’m not as smart as I thought I was. Why? Because I was stupid enough to think an NBA player would give up money and glamour for the chance to win an NBA title. I thought players, especially players past their prime with a few years left in the league, would bypass the money, come to Cleveland and jump at the chance to play with LeBron — to win that title. Well, this free agency period has made me realize that I’m living in a fantasy world. (I think Mike and Tim already know this). Cause guess what, it’s always about the money. The examples are many, I’m sure you know them all. Remember, I thought Jason Kidd would come here to play with his buddy LBJ, finally win that title. (He took $24 million and one more shot in Dallas). Hedo took a few million more to join a lousy Toronto team when he might have won a title if he would have signed with Portland. In all cases, they took the money and ran. Sure, you can say if LeBron had committed to more years here, we might have gotten someone to come here — but, I’m not buying it. It’s all about the money So, realistically, here’s my recommendation to Ferry for future player acquistions: Plan to over pay to get someone to come here Trade for players so they don’t have a choice I can dream that free agents will love C-Town. I can pretend that the cold weather won’t bother them. I can hope that the lure of playing with LBJ will make them commit to coming here. However, if I look way down, deep inside — realistically - chances are none of that will happen. But, if we’ve got big time cash — if we could offer Ariza $30 mill he’d come here. Proof be told, offer him the same money as Houston — he doesn’t come. I don’t care if he’s second fiddle or not, he’ll come here for big time cash So, all the pundits can complain that we overpay for free agents — just like they are complaining about the deal for Andy right now. Barring a trade — and I think that’s how we’ll get our true point guard before the season - we better be prepared to ante up Mr Gilbert. It is what it is — so, I hope you can come through Dad
