Tonight, after another Cavaliers win, I wanted to ask a simple, theoretical question:
Is it more enjoyable to watch the Cavs fight and scrap and pull out a two-point wins against teams like New Jersey, Philadelphia, and Washington, but only finish with a record of 45-37 … or … is it more enjoyable to see the Cavs blow out 60% of their opponents, have a few great games against the so-called elite teams, and end the season with the #1 seed in the conference?
I hope I don’t sound like I’m being sarcastic. Because it’s a genuine question.
It may not be fun to see the Cavs get blown out by Toronto, like they did last week, but it also wasn’t very fun to watch the Cavs screw around with the Nets for four quarters or completely level the Indiana Pacers, like they did last year. Sure, those blowout wins were great video game basketball for 12 to 24 minutes some times, but after that they were a snoozefest.
On some level, a .500 team - with a point differential as close to 0 as possible - may actually be the most entertaining kind of team to be rooting for. Every game is relatively close. Every game is a potential win. That only a little more than half of them will turn out in the Cavaliers’ favor (hypothetically, of course) is only a sidebar. The drama will be there throughout. And that’s something worth watching.
Unless all we care about anymore are championships.
And maybe we do. Maybe we should … I would say we should if we had any control over the proceedings … but since we don’t, well, let’s just search for entertainment.
Go Cavs.
