The NY Times on the Pick-and-Roll

Highlights:

Last year, Pick-and-Roll was run on 18.6% of all possessions.

When LeBron ran Pick-and-Roll the Cavs averaged 1.1 points per possession, second in the league to Jameer Nelson/Orlando (1.15).

League-wide, teams score fewer points off Pick-and-Roll when the defense goes under the pick. Surprising, but this probably has something to do with a lot of below average jump shooters running the play, and is not necessarily an indictment of switching or going over the screen. LeBron, for instance, created .93 points per play when the defense went under the pick.

Incidentally, this is why you see plenty of teams - the Cavs included - run High Pick-and-Roll with the game on the line. It’s their highest percentage play. Hence the logic behind LeBron vs. the World.

In the article, Jerry Sloan comments that he doesn’t like Utah to run the Pick-and-Roll until they have to because it contributes to the other players just standing around. We’ve certainly seen evidence of that.
