Fussball-Bundesliga is a Good Thing in America, too

funny soccer

Wasn’t today’s Browns game fun to watch?  I thought it was enjoyable, a lot of laughs, and just a good time here with Mikey.  Both teams were equally bad, couldn’t tackle, with semi-potent offenses —- mostly because of some bad defenses.

In other words, two equally lousy teams playing each other made it competitive and fun to watch.  In other words — Second Division Football.

Which is precisely the point of this post.

Although I have had a couple of beers today, I’m not drunk.  This is just an opportunity to internationalize Jose Mesa fans — and suggest yet another European import to this country.  Yes, I’m suggesting the NFL implement something that’s been going on in Europe for 35 years - First and Second Division Football.

You see, Fussball-Bendesliga is the German soccer league - which plays with two divisions:  the 1. Bundesliga (although it is rarely referred to with the First prefix), and, below that, the 2. Bundesliga (Second Bundesliga), which has been the second tier of German football since 1974.

Teams have to earn their way into the top division — and can also lose their way into the lower division.  How does it work?

Effective from the 2008–09 season, the Bundesliga will reinstate an earlier German system of promotion and relegation:

  • The bottom two finishers in the Bundesliga are automatically relegated to the 2. Bundesliga, with the top two finishers in the 2. Bundesliga taking their place.

So, that’s what I propose for the NFL - create two divisions so the schluck teams like the Browns can play against all the other schluck teams to try to earn their way into the top league.  Imagine, we’d get to play teams like the Bills, KC, and Oakland every single week.  We’d have a chance to win —- every week.  We’d have a lot more fun and wouldn’t get so frustrated.

God forbid, we would win enough games to vault to the top division.  If we did, it would be the classic “one and done”, for the next year we’d lose enough games to get demoted back to play our good old friends, the bottom feeders in the Second Division.

Maybe we could even have our own Second Division playoffs — with the top game called the Less Than Super Bowl — or maybe the Schlucker Bowl game.

Think about it — the system works in Germany, England, and several other countries in Europe — why not here?

After today’s game, I’m all for it.

BTW - this would work in Major League Baseball, too.  We have a version of it now, it’s called the “Central Division”
