I have to agree with everything M wrote in his column titled “The Walrus, The Big Show, The White Ale”. (Big shout out to M for referencing The Beatles - the greatest band of all time). However, I’d like to add another piece to the discussion — the fact that Alpha Dog may decide to leave on his own.
Now, let’s review. AD took this job because he would be The Top Dog. He was the franchise mouthpiece, he thought he had his patsy Kokinos as the GM, and he talked to “Randy” all the time. So, he’s been that guy for most of this year. Suddenly, he’s lost his mojo - Kokinos is fighting back, Lerner has decided to go in another direction, thus The Walrus is migrating to C-Town.
So, why would AD leave on his own?
Well, I’ll admit that I’ve watched Animal Planet a few times. As a result, I do know that once the Alpha Dog loses his status in the pack (In other words, another bigger, stronger dog kicks his ass), then the “post alpha dog” is banished from the pack. As Barkley would say, “Yous got to go”.
Well, as far as I can tell, The Walrus has given Alpha a pretty good ass whipping. So, he’ll ultimately be banished from the pack. Since this is a business, not an actual wolf or dog pack, he might not leave the pack immediately. However, he will have to leave and he might just go on his own.
Now, he might not quit, but he can certainly object to ”the will of The Walrus” and if he does that enough, he’ll get fired. So, he’ll receive his paycheck and Lerner will just pay another ex-coach. Afterall, AD isn’t stupid - he knows if he can’t do things his way, he might as well leave - getting fired keeps the $$ coming in.
So, that’s my take, looking at it a little differently than M.
I’ll bet that surprises no one.
Holla at my boys, Holla for Christmas
