Highly informative blog post from Larry Coon at the NY Times which lists the players who could be signed and traded before the deadline. Szczerbiak is the featured player.
The details are in Coon’s post, but the basic concept is this: Wally could be signed to a pro-rated deal worth up to $16.4M.
This is a massive asset for Danny Ferry - and the possibility of a pretty big windfall for Hot Potato.
Let’s say Wally was dealt before the first game back after the All-Star break. If he accepted a sign and trade deal, he’d stand to make about $5.4M if the Cavs signed him to the max.
Ferry could sign Wally for any amount necessary, really - salaries in a trade need to match within 125% - and acquire one of the following players easily :
Andre Iguodala ($12.5M)
Amar’e Stoudemire ($16.4M)
Troy Murphy ($11M)
Antawn Jamison ($11.6M)
In fact, Wally is actually a bigger asset money wise than Zyndrunas “DVD’s” Ilgauskas, who’s expiring contract is worth $11.5M.
In other words, we now know who’s getting dealt before Feb 18th if the Cavs make a trade.
